El Santo Claus has got his burro loaded up and he's making his way to Tucson!  To help him out, Raices Taller 222 Art Gallery & Workshop presents "Poco a Poco" - an exhibition of affordable small works by over 30 local artists.  This collection of smaller paintings, sculptures, prints, etc. will help you find that special one-of-a-kind gift of art for the holidays.  Best of all, in honor of our gallery name, each piece is priced at $222 or less!  Join us for our opening reception on Saturday December 3, 2011 for a fun evening of music, refreshments and great art!

For more than two years, Pan Left member and producer Jason Michael Aragón has documented and collaborated with people in Maricopa County who are fighting against the abuses and injustices perpetrated by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. This feature length non-commercial and non-profit documentary Under Arpaio from Aragón and co-producer Mary Charlotte Thurtle reveals the story of people affected by the ongoing abuse in jails, de facto immigration enforcement through racial profiling, and corruption within the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department- now under Federal investigation.

This documentary shows the people in the Phoenix area that are rarely seen in the national spotlight, but are the ones on the daily front lines as Arpaio continues to conduct raids on migrant and Latino neighborhoods, ignore bad jail conditions, and waste more than hundreds of millions of dollars in tax payer money. Under Arpaio features activists, low-income residents, attorneys, reporters, elected officials, and indigenous people who speak truth to power. In the face of all of this, the community targeted by Arpaio has not stood still but has organized and continues to fight. This is their story of struggle against one of the most well-known law enforcement figures in recent U.S. history.

¡Chubasco! – a Monsoon Exhibition 

  June 4 – July 16, 2011

The statue of Tlaloc, the Aztec rain god is 23 feet tall and weighs 168 tons.  Hidden for hundreds of years until one day a farmer was plowing his field near Texcoco, when he came upon this incredible statue. It was unearthed, and in 1964 it was moved to Mexico City where it now occupies a special place of honor in front of the Anthropological Museum.  The day Tlaloc was moved into Mexico City there was an incredible downpour, the heaviest rainfall since records have been kept!  We are calling for  artwork with monsoon and water themes to keep Tlaloc happy!

Viviendo Verde – (Living Green)

Kermit the frog said “It’s not easy being green”, he should have tried being brown in Arizona!  Unlike Ricky Martin who was living La Vida Loca, we’re looking for guest artists living La Vida Verde that are working with recycled materials or whose work includes environmental themes.

 Mí Musica - (My Music)

  September 3 – October 1, 2011

Our nana in the backroom used to say “Aye! Take off that crazy musica and put on some musica romantica, like Trio Los Panchos!”   As artists we have all been inspired by the music around us, past and present.  This exhibition challenges artists to create artwork based on a song or artwork with a musical theme.

Our annual homage to Dia de los Muertos, we are looking for community groups and individual artists to participate in this cultural celebration in the tradition of the Hispanic Southwest.  Personal tributes in the form of  altars, ofrendas (offerings), paintings, sculpture & mixed media work will be considered.

Sometimes smaller is better.  Just in time for Santo Claus, Poco a Poco is an exhibition of affordable small works all priced at $222 or less.  No particular theme for this exhibition, we want to fill the gallery with artwork from regional artists that will make great gifts for the holidays!  Look for extended open hours during Poco a Poco!

We have two ways for you to submit artwork for consideration:

1. Email images of your artwork to raicestaller222@aol.com

OR

 2. Drop off your artwork to the gallery to be reviewed. Please note, you will have to leave it for one week. Hours of operation are Friday & Saturday 1pm to 5pm.

If your submission is accepted, a suggested donation of $25 helps us to recover the costs of exhibiting, representing and marketing of your artwork.  However, as a 501(C) (3) educational nonprofit, any amount you are able to donate is appreciated and benefits our organization, our mission and our work in the community.

Our annual exhibition of art by women, Mujeres, Mujeres, Mujeres, is now in its 7th year!  Each year we bring together an exciting collection of painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media work by local, national and international women artists.This work ranges from traditional to the cutting edge contemporary, the show brings together women artists that are daring both inwardly and outwardly and who continue to make art with the knowledge that art made by women has been largely ignored throughout much of cultural history.

Join us in welcoming Dolores Huerta, legendary labor leader, organizer, social activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers

     Dolores Huerta grew up in Stockton, California, a farming community in the San Joaquin Valley.  In the early 1950s she completed a teaching degree and then worked as an elementary school teacher. Witnessing that that her students, many of them children of farm workers, were living in poverty without enough food to eat or other basic necessities, she became one of the founders of the Stockton chapter of the Community Services Organization.  She worked tirelessly to improve social and economic conditions for farm workers and to fight discrimination.

     In 1960, Huerta created the Agricultural Workers Association (AWA) and lobbied politicians on many issues, especially those involving migrant workers.  In 1962, she co-founded workers' union with Cesar Chavez, which was later known as the United Farm Workers (UFW).  Known as a skilled organizer and tough negotiator. She was instrumental in the union's many successes, including the strikes against California grape growers in the 1960s and 1970s, and demands for safe working environments including legislation regarding unsafe use of pesticides.

Today, Huerta continues to her work to improve the lives of workers, immigrants, and women. She has received many honors for her activism, including the Ellis Island Medal of Freedom Award (1993) and the Eleanor Roosevelt Award (1999).  Mother of 11 children, Dolores was inducted to the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993.

Raices Taller 222 Art Gallery and Workshop is Tucson's only Latino based nonprofit cooperative contemporary art gallery located in the Downtown Historic Warehouse District

The brothers Einar and Jamex de la Torre will begin their evening with an artist talk at the Tucson Museum of Art to commemorate the opening of their touring show Borderlandia: Cultural Topographies.

At 6:30 pm they will join us at Raices Taller Art Gallery & Workshop for a celebratory reception. Please join us for mingling, networking and inspiration to welcome these talented artists from afar.
